Project Mulberry is a realistic fiction novel about friendship, silkworms, and racism. The book, a Bluebonnet Award Nominee, is told from the point of view of a Korean girl named Julia Song. She has recently moved into a small town in Illinois and is struggling to fit in, while still honoring her heritage. A neat thing about this book is that the main character, Julia, and the author have a conversation with one another at the end of each chapter. These are often colorful and hilarious.
I made this book a Level 5, because it does deal honestly, but in a good way, with racism, friendship, and family life. Project Mulberry is a delicious book with a flowing plot and good word choice.
