This allows us to earn a bit of money from the many fun hours we've put into this project, while avoiding the clutter of advertisements on the site.
The money we earn from Amazon goes to support our book habit, allowing us to purchase more wonderful books to share as a family and with you, but we don't want to stop there. We think of Family Reads as a community of people who love books, creativity, and writing, and we want to support that in any way we can. That's why 50% of all income we earn will be donated to a terrific organization, 826 Seattle.
826 Seattle is one of seven organizations across the country, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Ann Arbor, and Valencia, California.
826 National is an innovative tutoring, writing, and publishing nonprofit based in seven cities across the country. Since starting up in 2002, our goal has been to assist students ages 6-18 with their writing skills while helping teachers get their classes excited about the writing. Our mission is based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
The centers provide field trips, tutoring, workshops, student publishing, and in-school assistance. Each is made possible through hundreds of incredible volunteers, donations, and through retails sales. The sales are one of the truly innovative parts of 826 - each of the centers includes a delightfully wondrous storefront with its own unique theme, including superhero supply, space exploration (enjoy a virtual tour), and the world of pirates. We think all of the 826 chapters, and particularly 826 Seattle, fit perfectly with the mission of Family Reads. It brings us great joy to know that we will be playing a small part in helping students enjoy the thrill of creative expression.
